As some of you may know, western diets are very unbalanced in having too many n=6 fatty acids and too few n=3. Because we build so many things (including cell membranes and neurons) out of these fatty acids, this imabalance causes many different problems. Since standard prenatal vitamins don't include EFAs, S takes an additional EFA supplement. Some studies suggest that this can increase IQ by several points at age 4, ie see here. Postnatal supplementation is likely to have some positive affect as well - I encourage other parents to use this supplement as well. Just make sure you use a high-quality supplement (ie from LEF or VRP), or a non-fish source of oil (flaxseed oil, borage oil), to make sure you aren't getting mercury.

B and I started using Udo's Oil Blend about two months ago -- it contains a mix of non-fish oils that provide a 2:1 ratio of n=3 to n=6. More info here...http://www.udoerasmus.com/products/oil_blend.htm if you're interested.

You can't use it for cooking, of course, but we've taken to putting it in oatmeal, on popcorn or vegetables instead of butter, in salads (mixed with balsamic vinegar), or tossed with pasta.

We're not looking to supplement baby-building materials, but have noticed positive effects such as softer skin and hair, stronger fingernails, and elimation of dandruff/dry skin issues.

Quick question: do we know that this imbalance is unimportant in adulthood?

it's not! Fish oil supplements are correlated w/ lots of good things: smoother skin, less asthma, less arthritis and other inflamation, less allergies, less heart disease...there are a whole range of bad things, many having to do with inflammation, which happen because of our western n=6 heavy diets.

The hard part to me is how do you supplement a toddler with flaxseed oil or fish oil? Other than the possibility of home made smoothies, it would make their milk taste weird and trust me they likely won't drink it then. I'm a little stumped at this one.

I'm lucky, William likes salmon and fish sticks, but he really should have it every day.

Thoughts or creative ideas?
