:P
good news: no infections found
bad news: lots of AB&Ds, and they seem to be getting worse. (Apneas: not breathing, Bradycardias: pulse dropping to about half of normal, and oxygen Desaturations: level of oxygen in the blood dropping to a level that sets off an alarm)
AB&Ds are normal premie stuff, but he's been having a lot of them, enough that the docs have been concerned, and its really disturbing to witness.
A lot of his episodes are a result of not being comfortable, or being moved around. The nurse he has has a huge impact on how many episodes he has, and how bad they are. Today was very stressful because he had a couple of terrible nurses this afternoon. When Genese helps me take him out he rarely desats, but these #$@&*s had him actually crying in addition to episodes when they took him out, and then they just left us there while they went out to lunch.
It was an obviously very green nurse in charge of him, and another nurse who sucked who was training her. Its the first nurse I've met doing training that I didn't really like, so at least that's something: the staff usually has very good taste with who they pick to teach the newbies.
I learned from the greenie that fetish nurse had stayed past her 12hr 7pm to 7am shift until 11:40am today, so that's probably why we got stuck as an "assignment" for the newbie instead of having one of the good nurses take him at 7am. Although, normally being an assignment for a newbie wouldn't be such a big deal, because as stated, they usually have great nurses helping them out and don't do things like turn their back and play with spreadsheets instead of watching the baby's stats.
Sorry, </rant> ;)
Yeah, its been a long day ;) Thankfully the assignment only lasted from 11:40 until the shift change at 3pm, and the nurse who took over was a good one. And it was really great to have Patri come in tonight. The night nurse, while clearly not super experienced, was trying really hard and worked with us rather than against us. (Tovar was having a lot of episodes while Patri and I were there, so we were all trying hard to figure out what the problem was and fix it)
Genese said she'd be back tomorrow night... I look forward to her shifts so much!! (on days I know she's working, I don't spend my time dreading who we might end up with this time ;) Now if I can just find a decent day shift nurse to sign on as a primary...
